For example, Lyne did not allow Mickey Rourke and Basinger to talk to each other off-set. The author knows how to write well and describes perceptively what is happening, without understanding the significance of it. She gains some insight into her needs but not enough to protect her fragile psyche before she experiences a breakdown.
The writing is beautiful and makes one want to reach out to the writer to counsel her how she could meet her needs without endangering her psyche. Not possible; according to a piece by her daughter, Ursula, the author took her own life in middle age, probably because her chain smoking caused her to contract lung cancer.
The daughter did not reveal whether her mother ever achieved sexual satisfaction safely. The author eventually revealed her real name, and the fact English was her second language. The irony is that all the time she gladly functioned as a sexual slave and torture victim, she held down a job as an editor at Ms Magazine, then the bastion of women's rights, if not outright female dominance. Don't bother with the movie. Though starring Kim Basinger, the book, though not illustrated, is far more erotic.
Despite some scenes showing semi-nudity, the movie failed to get the message across. Numerous scenes in the book are absent in the movie and one major scene in the movie was never in the book.
