However, my student uploaded a document with images, and when I opened this in teams and then in Word Online, I could tell that the formatting is askew: the Pictures are out of place. Then I opened the document in Word and the formatting is correct. I've had this problem before with the Online MS apps. Why can't Teams and Word OnLine maintain the formatting of such documents? Its just a limitation of Word Online.
There are certain things that just don't format correctly and there is also a functionality deficiency in Online as per the previous posted link. I assume with images it is to do with the layout and the conversion between a word document and HTML. Andrew Hodges so what you are telling me is that if any of our users actually touch the doc while it is in Sharepoint it gets totally screwed up.

I'm not sure about updates, but I have converted many other documents in the same series of documents using the same template, etc. There seems to be something in this single document that has messed up, firstly I note that when I open it, it tells me it's in 'compatibility mode' when I have never saved it as anything other than a current word document, and the formatting always goes wrong at the exact same point.

Then I opened it today, and problems have ensued ever since. I opened the original document that was sent to me by the author and made some test edits, and the problem isn't happening, so it must be something that I did by accident.
Well, I was not able to figure out the issue. Had to make a new document and copy and paste the edits I had already made. I'm having the same issue that MSheehan12 had in I'm using Word This is actually the second time it's happened with me.
I make changes using Track Changes, review the entire document to verify all changes are correct, save it, and close it. When I reopen it, unwanted formatting changes have been made all bullet and numbering changes, I believe , some of which are grayed out and can't be accepted or rejected. I am supporting someone who had this same issue. She opened a document on a network drive that had been edited by many different people, made some edits and saved it as a new document. In the new document formatting changes appeared everywhere the "List Paragraph" style was applied.
I was able to reproduce the issue by going to one of the bulleted points, going to the "List Paragraph" style's drop-down menu and selecting "Update List Paragraph to Match Selection. I cannot reproduce the issue either on her computer or mine on another document, however, only the one where the formatting marks came up.
